How to Make Your Hair Extensions Last: A Real Aftercare Guide

Getting hair extensions done is only half the equation. How you care for them afterwards determines whether they last their full lifespan looking natural, or start tangling and thinning within weeks.

Brushing correctly

Always brush from the ends upward, holding the section above the bond or tape to avoid pulling on the attachment point. Use a loop brush or extension-specific brush designed to glide through without snagging.

Washing routine

Wash extensions less frequently than you might your natural hair alone. Two to three times a week is generally sufficient. Always use sulphate-free shampoo, and apply conditioner from mid-length to ends only, avoiding the root and bond area where product buildup can weaken the attachment.

Sleeping with extensions

This is where most damage happens. Always tie hair into a loose braid or low ponytail before bed to prevent tangling and friction against the bond points overnight. Sleeping on silk or satin pillowcases also significantly reduces breakage and frizz.

Heat styling

Extensions can generally be heat-styled just like natural hair, but always use a heat protectant and keep tools on a moderate setting. Avoid direct heat on the tape or bond area itself.

Swimming and extensions

Chlorine and salt water can affect both the extension hair and the bond adhesive. If swimming, tie hair up and rinse thoroughly with fresh water immediately afterwards.

When to book a move-up appointment

Tape-in extensions typically need to be moved up every 6 to 8 weeks as your natural hair grows and the bond shifts away from the scalp. Waiting too long can cause matting near the root and unnecessary strain on your natural hair.

Signs your extensions need attention

Visible tangling near the bond, a "clicking" or sliding sensation, or noticeable discomfort are all signs it's time to come in early rather than waiting for your scheduled appointment.
